How to Encrypt Files in Windows 8.1, Windows 10

Encrypting your Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 files can solve a lot of security related issues; basically it encrypts your passwords for the Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 system so that someone that doesn’t have the specific encryption key cannot access your data thus lowering the exposure risk to your operating system files.

Tutorial for encrypting files in Windows 8.1 and Windows 10

1. In order to properly encrypt your files you will need to use the “device encryption” feature.
2. You will need to sign into your Microsoft account you made when you first installed Windows 8.1 or Windows 10.
   Note: You will need to sign into your account with administrative privileges to have access to this feature.
3. Move the mouse cursor to the lower right side of the screen to open the Charms bar.
4. In the charms bar left click on the “Settings” icon available there.
5. In the Settings window you will need to left click on the “Change PC Settings” feature.
6. Left click on the “Accounts” feature present in the “Change PC Settings” topic.
7. From the “Accounts” window left click on “Switch to a Microsoft account”.
8. Log in from there to your Microsoft account with administrative privileges.
9. Now to turn device encryption feature on you will need to move the mouse cursor to the lower right side of the screen.
10. Left click on the “Search” feature you have in that menu.
11. In the search box that pops up type “encryption”.
12. You will need to left click on the “Change device encryption settings” feature.
13. From the “Change device encryption settings” window you will only need to follow the instructions on the screen to activate the encryption to your system if it is not already activated.
    Note: The encryption key will be saved to your Microsoft account so if you ever need it just log into the account and you can access it from there.
    Note2: Now that you have enabled this feature you should know that you will probably need it when your Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 device will go into recovery mode, when the system will detect a hardware change or when the system will detect a hardware malfunction.
